Potomac is an unincorporated community in Montgomery County, Maryland, roughly 15 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. It is one of the wealthiest communities in the country, with a median home value well above $1 million and a population of approximately 45,000 to 47,000 residents. The community does not have its own city government - county services, including permits and inspections, all run through Montgomery County. Most homes are large Colonials, split-levels, and custom builds on wooded lots of one acre or more, the majority constructed during the suburban expansion from the mid-1960s through the early 1990s. Residents use River Road and Falls Road as the main travel corridors, and Potomac Village - at the intersection of Falls Road and River Road - serves as the informal commercial center of the community.
The southern edge of the community runs close to the Potomac River and the C&O Canal towpath, which is one of the most-used outdoor recreation corridors in the D.C. region. Congressional Country Club, one of the most recognized golf clubs on the East Coast, sits on the Potomac-Bethesda border and is a well-known landmark for longtime residents. The owner-occupancy rate in Potomac is high - most families stay for years or decades - which means homeowners here invest in their properties and expect work done to a standard that reflects the value of the home. Neighbors North Potomac to the north and Poolesville to the northwest round out the western part of our Montgomery County service footprint.
